Rock Takes Center Stage At Muskegon Summer Celebration!
Rock Takes Center Stage
MUSKEGON, MI, April 13, 2010 – Joining previously announced acts Toby Keith, Randy Houser, and Bucky Covington as part of the Miller Lite Headline Artists at the Muskegon Summer Celebration will be ZZ Top, Foreigner, Styx, O.A.R., Four Finger Five, Papa Roach, and Chevelle. “The key to having a successful lineup is making sure there is a significant rock influence,” said Main Stage Director, Tim Lipan. “The acts announced today provide a great mix of classic rock as well as acts on the charts today.”
ZZ Top will open this year’s Miller Lite Headline Artists series on Thursday, June 24. ZZ Top’s music is 100% American, powerful and instantly recognizable just like their unmistakable look. Hailing from Houston, Texas, this group reached superstardom in the late 70s and are instantly recognizable both in appearance and by their music. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, the three original members, Dusty Hill, Billy Gibbons, and Frank Beard, still bring the house down with every performance. Some of ZZ Top’s most popular songs include, “Sharp Dressed Man,” “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” “Cheap Sunglasses,” “Tube Steak Boogie,” “Leg,” Sleeping Bag,” “La Grange,” and “Velcro Fly.”
Co-headlining Tuesday, June 29, will be Foreigner and Styx. Foreigner is universally hailed as one of the most popular rock acts in the world, racking up scores of smash hits, multi-platinum albums, and sold out concert tours. From “Cold As Ice” to “Hot Blooded,” “Urgent” to “Jukebox Hero,” “Waiting For A Girl Like You” to the chart topper “I Want To Know What Love is,” Foreigner's thrilling mix of blues, pop and rock continues to captivate generation after generation of music fans. Today, over 65 million albums later, Foreigner is an ensemble of talented musicians each adding their individual credentials to the mix to make the band stronger and more powerful than ever.
Styx members Tommy Shaw, James Young, Lawrence Gowan, Todd Sucherman and Ricky Phillips have performed more live since 1999 than all of the previous years of Styx’ career combined. Two Super Bowl appearances, Pollstar Box Office chart-topping tours with Def Leppard, Journey, Boston, REO Speedwagon, Bad Company (to name a few), two more studio albums and with no end in sight, Styx continues to thrill audiences across the globe. Formed in a suburban Chicago basement in the early 1970s, Styx would eventually transform into the virtual arena rock prototype by the late '70s and early '80s, due to a fondness for big rockers and soaring power ballads. Some of Styx’s more popular hits include, “Mr. Roboto,” “Come Sail Away,” “Lady,” “Too Much Time on My Hands,” “The Best of Times,” “Babe,” and “Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man).”
Wednesday, June 30, O.A.R. (Of A Revolution) makes its Summer Celebration debut. Hailed as one of the best live bands on the planet, O.A.R. has built a rabid following and a well deserved reputation as a must-see band. "People often tell me that they relate to us and our music, not just with the words, but with the general manner in which we act and perform. I tell them that may be because there is no 'act'," co-founder and lyricist Marc Roberge says. "We are just five friends playing songs we love to play and enjoying every minute of it.” Some of O.A.R.’s hits making the charts include “Hey Girl” from their album In Between Now and Then, “Lay Down,” “Love and Memories,” and “Heard the World” from Stories of a Stranger, and “Shattered (Turn the Car Around)” from This Town.
Opening for O.A.R. will be local sensation Four Finger Five. This true power trio, hailing from the Muskegon area, Four Finger Five is known for the full, powerful sound they create with only three members. Consisting of guitarist/lead singer Joe Sturgill, bassist Mike Phillips, and drummer Steve Harris, the band was recently named one of Billboard magazine’s “Top 5 New Bands Breaking The Rules.” Four Finger Five was also cited as "One of Billboard’s top up-and-coming festival bands." The band presents a unique mix of rock and blues while at the same time bringing together elements of pop, soul, and even reggae. To date Four Finger Five has released their self-titled debut album in 2007 and Enormous Pocket in 2008.
Thursday, July 1, features Summer Celebration newcomers, Papa Roach and Chevelle. Starting out as a punk and rap-influenced band, the Northern California group, Papa Roach, eventually grew into a straight rock band with heavy metal leanings. The group formed in 1993 and was releasing EPs shortly thereafter. Papa Roach’s regional success led to tours with Suicidal Tendencies, Sevendust, and Powerman 5000 as well as a contract with Dreamworks and released their debut album, Infest, in early 2000. Since then the band has released three more albums, the latest being Metamorphosis in early 2009. Some of their smash hits include, “Last Resort,” “She Loves Me Not,” “Getting Away with Murder,” “Scars,” “Forever,” and “Lifeline.”
On the same bill will be the Chicago-based trio Chevelle. Formed by brothers Sam, Pete, and Joe Loeffler in 1995, Chevelle came to be known as a band with an aggressive, heavy sound. Their first album came out in 1999. As typically happens, success with the album led to gigs with national acts which led to a record deal with Epic and a new album in 2002, Wonder What’s Next. The album went platinum in part because of the number one single, “Send the Pain Below.” A tour with Ozzfest followed in the summer of 2003. Subsequent albums had produced more top ten hits like “Vitamin R (Leading Us Along),” “I Get It,” “Jars,” “Letter From a Thief,” and “The Clincher.”
