Death Cab For Cutie to debut You Are A Tourist by end of month, pre Sasquatch shows and more.
Hot on the heels of the news of a new Death Cab for Cutie album, Death Cab for Cutie bassist Nick Harmer dropped by Seattle’s 107.7 The End to share more insights. Harmer clarified a few points about the album, titled Codes And Keys, including:
* The album had a piece-by-piece, modular recording process.
* “Not a guitar-based record” doesn’t mean no guitars. Rather, instrumentation varies throughout the record, like 2005’s Plans.
* The first single “You Are A Tourist” hits radio at the end of March (Harmer didn’t mention it, but the song will also be released as a 7-inch on Record Store Day, April 16)
* The cover is indeed a number key from a push-button telephone. Remember those? But the number sign itself is an "ominous and open-ended kind of statement."
* A live DVD of a Bellingham show will be released in May, right before album release.
*More shows may be announced to prepare for an actual tour.
Ben Gibbard’s recent live version of the title track (did anyone else catch the song’s similarity in progression to Cat Power’s “The Greatest?”) can be heard here. And the entire interview can be streamed below.
Codes And Keys is scheduled for release on May 31.
