Review: Bright Eyes and The Mynabirds At The Riviera Theatre In Chicago

Photos By: Chelsea Clark & Ross Berg.

In what could have potentially been the last time ever that Conor Oberst performs in Chicago using the Bright Eyes moniker, fans from all over the Chicagoland area gathered to celebrate the end of an era. The show took place at the sold out Riviera Theater (it was supposed to happen at The Vic, but, there was high demand for tickets). To kick the festivities off was another Saddle Creek band you've probably heard us talk about a lot, The Mynabirds.

The Mynabirds aren't the ones to disappoint an audience, and, as Laura Burhenn and company walked on stage, the crowd became anxious for music. The set list featured the highs and lows of the debut album titled "What We Lose In The Fire We Gain In The Flood", including the songs "L.A. Rain" and "Numbers Don't Lie." The set was short and sweet, but they delivered the point across, and, I'm sure gained a few fans.

Next was the main event, the performance that we've been waiting on since 2007. Bright Eyes.

Conor and co took to the stage sometime around 9:00. The set included favorites from the Bright Eyes discography, as well as a few songs from "The Peoples Key." Everyone became ecstatic the moment Conor walked out on stage, and the energy didn't die down until the show ended.

Set list:
Firewall
Jejune Stars
Take it Easy (Love Nothing)
Four Winds
Cleanse Song
We Are Nowhere and It's Now
Shell Games
Approximate Sunlight
Arc of Time
Falling Out of Love at This Volume
Triple Spiral
Hot Knives
An Attempt to Tip the Scales
Padraic My Prince
Beginner's Mind
Bowl of Oranges
Poison Oak
Old Soul Song
The Calendar Hung Itself
Ladder Song

Encore:
Lua
Lover I Don't Have to Love
Road To Joy
One for You, One for Me

It was a wonderful show, well worth the wait. Lets just hope he makes it back to perform in Chicago one last time as Bright Eyes. Lollapalooza, perhaps?
