Michele Saunders is a rising star and for a good reason. Her poppy dance beats and sweet lyrics easily get caught in your head and will become a staple for girls' playlists everywhere. She is sure to become an inspiration to those pursuing their creative dreams. She conquered her shyness and not only released her debut album Set Me Free but is also going on tour! We were lucky enough to snag an exclusive interview with this California pop sensation and you'll be sure to hear more from her in the future.
How did you get started with singing?
Since I was really young, I loved to sing. My mom always encouraged me and knew that I had a talent. I performed in plays and was in lessons for singing. Once I started to be heavily involved with my school and received a ton of school work, school became my priority, but my passion for singing never faded.
What was it like recording your first album/how was the process?
It was very exciting, I had never been in a studio before and didn't know what the process was like so everything was so new to me. I had recorded on my own microphone at home, but never with my own track or lyrics. The process was fun, although it was a lot of work. It can feel like a long process and a lot of work and hours go into making just one song, but after hearing the finished product, it is all worth it in the end.
What are some of the unexpected challenges you've faced?
Not having much experience and the lack of professional practice I have lacked throughout the years. There was one point in my life where I didn't have guidance (singing lessons) to be able to keep practicing and pushing myself to keep becoming better. However, at the time, I didn't know that it would become my career.
You're going on tour which is really exciting! What do you look forward to most about it?
The people I get to meet. Being able to talk to the fans is probably my favorite part because all I want to do is make people happy, make an impact on them, and encourage them to be the best person that they can be.
If you could perform anywhere, where would it be?
Madison Square Garden. It is one of my goals to perform there.
What are some of your favorite songs either current or all time?
I have a lot of favorite songs, so it is really hard for me to pick one, but one song I will never get tired of is Teenage Dream by Katy Perry.
What do you expect the rest of this year to bring?
Blessings. I have already been blessed with so much and the future is looking bright, so hopefully more opportunities to make people smile and to make an impact.
Do you write your own songs and if so, where do you get your inspiration from?
I have written some of my own songs. The inspiration comes from all different places. If I am getting a feeling or a vibe off the track itself, that might be how I write it. I write how I feel when I listen to a particular song. Or, if I am writing about a specific topic, I channel how I felt in certain situations and start writing it down. They end up beautifully.
Where do you see yourself/hope to be in five years?
Hopefully making more songs, bigger concerts, and maybe even being in some movies.
Who would you say are your biggest influences?
Vanessa Hudgens and Ariana Grande. When I was younger, I was all about Vanessa Hudgens. I loved the way she sang and the way she looked and everything she did. I had so many posters of her on my wall, I wanted to be like her. And as I got older, I started to like Ariana Grande. She was so talented and became a huge inspiration when I wanted to follow my dreams. My sister is a huge fan, so we always watch her videos and performances on YouTube and it gives me such a rush. The way she has impacted people's lives like my sister's just gives me more ambition to pursue what I want to be.
What advice do you have for those wanting to pursue their dreams of singing?
Go for it. You never know what might happen. Every person who is living their dream right now had to start somewhere, they weren't just handed everything. Work hard and think positively, dreams stay dreams if you don't try to pursue them.
